Waking Up Painlessly

Sleeping posture is essential.

There are many causes for waking up in the morning with back or shoulder pain. Our last blog identified a soft mattress as one of the culprits. But, if the bed isn’t the problem, there could be other causes. Here we explore some of them:

Sleping posture

Sometimes, merely changing a sleeping position can alleviate back pain. In other cases, a strategically placed pillow can take the pressure off of the spine or hips. Side sleepers can add a pillow between their knees, realigning the hips. Back sleepers can tuck a pillow beneath their knees. Stomach sleepers will want a pillow beneath their stomach. Even the shape of a head pillow can align the neck for more comfortable sleep.

Biological clock

Eat right, and sleep right—but not necessarily both at the same time.

Studies by scientists at Manchester University indicate that our natural endorphins don’t kick in until we’re awake for a few minutes. This lag is the reason a person can be stiff in the morning, but feel better once they wake up and start moving around. Researchers hope to study this and other phenomena to learn more about treatments.

Moderation at the gym

Overexerting yourself at the gym or helping a friend move can leave you wincing the next day. Exercise is great, and we are all for it, but pushing yourself too hard will have you groaning the next morning.

Bad habits

Eat right, and sleep right—but not necessarily both at the same time.

Many people spend a good portion of their day in an office chair, which can lead to poor posture, and that can cause back, leg, neck, and shoulder stiffness. While experts recommend getting up and moving around every twenty minutes or so, it isn’t always possible. By the end of the day, a desk job will leave a person tired, which can result in wanting to relax, which creates more sedentary time.

We also live in a society which offers an abundance of fast, but not necessarily healthy, food. Stress is another commonality in our culture. Our bodies store the ill-effects of these habits, which translate to things like pain, high blood sugar, and more.

If you find yourself falling into bad habits, overdo it at the gym, or have an accident or injury, we can help. Our close-knit team will work together with you to make sure you get the chiropractic, massage, and physiotherapy treatments you need! We can also guide you toward better habits and practices to help you wake up painlessly in the morning.
